BOYERTOWN EYE CARE FAQs

Have a question? We have the answer. Check out these FAQs and give us a call today for more information!

Optical and Glasses

  • Can I bring in my own frame to get new lenses?

Yes! You can bring in a newly purchased or old favorite frame and with a valid glasses prescription and we can put new lenses in that frame.  It is preferred if we can keep the frame for 1-2 weeks to do that but there is a way for you to keep it as well.

  • What types of frames can I expect to see on display?

We have womans, mens, unisex, and childrens frames.  Some specialty frames included recreation specs, sunglasses, and safety frames.  Our sizes of frames include oversized or extended sizes, petite and/or tween.  We have many options, colors, and sizes. Brand names and generic styles too.  There will be something for everyone!

  • Is there a discount on purchasing a 2nd pair?

Many insurances offer a 20% discount on a 2nd pair purchased within a year of the first pair of glasses.  If not, we will honor a 10% discount on a 2nd pair of glasses purchased out of pocket within the first year of another pair of glasses.  This is a great option for sunglasses, safety glasses, computer glasses, or a duplicate pair.  The only exception is if this 2nd pair is purchased from our already discounted Quality Value frame section.

  • I broke my glasses, what should I do?

We will ask you to bring the glasses into the office to see if we can repair them for you. Rarely, we have to send them out to our lab for a week for a repair.  If the frame is defective and we are unable to fix it and the frame is under warranty, we will order you a new one.  If the warranty has expired, many times you can purchase a replacement.  If the frame is discontinued, sometimes we can cut your lenses down into a slightly smaller frame.

Insurance

  • Do you accept medical insurance?

We accept many medical insurances.  We bill them when you come in for an eye emergency or office visit for an eye issue.  We also can bill your annual eye examinations to medical insurance when there is a medical diagnosis.  We accept Medicare, Highmark Blue Shield, Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Capital Blue Cross, Aetna, and Humana.  We do not accept Independence Blue Cross or United Health Care medical insurance.  Please call if you have any questions about your coverage.

  • What vision insurance do you accept?

We accept Davis vision, Eyemed, Vision Service Plan, and Vision Benefits of America.  Some of these insurances are referred to by other names so we can help you figure out your coverage.  We may need to ask for the last 4 of your social security number, birthday, and/or zip code to find your benefits.  We do not accept Spectera or Blue Cross Vision/National Vision Administrators.

  • Will you bill my vision or medical insurance for my annual eye exam?

We will bill vision insurance for materials such as glasses and contacts.  Most vision plans will only pay for glasses OR contacts every 1-2 years but not both.  For all office visits for an eye issue, we will have to bill medical insurance.  Annual eye examinations can vary-  we will bill medical insurance if there is a reason to bill medically.  Otherwise, we will bill the vision insurance plan.  The optomap imaging can sometimes be billed medically if there is a medical diagnosis that warrants the imagining.  We can go over any copays that you may acquire at your visit before you are seen.  We also will pull your insurance benefits before your appointment and make sure you are eligble before you are seen.

Eye Examinations

  • Will I be dilated during my eye exam?

It is very important to check your retinal health to rule out any eye disease at every appointment.  We offer two options:  dilation which has side effects of blurry vision and light sensitivity OR optomap retinal imaging which is a picture of the back of the eye without the side effects.  Many medical insurances may cover the optomap imaging with a medical diagnosis.  If not, our charge for this service is $40 out of pocket.  The optomap offers the benefit of establishing a baseline of a patients eye health that can be compared to year after year.

  • What can I expect during my eye exam?

Our doctors will check your vision with and without glasses/contacts.  We will check your color vision, depth perception, eye muscle movements, pupils and peripheral vision.  We have the best technology to determine your glasses and contact lens prescription.  We will check your eye pressure for glaucoma.  Our qualified doctors will also check the front of the eye for dryness, allergies, and cataracts.  We will also evaluate the back of the eye with either our optos imaging or dilation drops to rule out any serious eye disease.

  • What ages can be seen at your office?

Our office accomodates ages 4 years old to over 100 years old very well.  We have a new office that is up to code on all ADA requirements.  Any patients under 4 years old that you suspect need to be screened for an eye issue should see a pediatric opthalmologist.  Call us if you need any suggestions or have any questions!

Contact Lenses

  • I am new to contacts, what should I expect?

In order to be fit and trained for contact lenses for the first time, a recent eye exam needs to be performed and a recent presciption should be acquired.  We will then schedule a 45-60 min session with trained staff to learn proper insertion and removal and care of the contacts.  A doctor will check vision and fit of the lenses on the eyes.  If successful with insertion and removal, the patient will leave with trials of contact lenses.  We will see the patient back in a week from the training to evaluate.  Once the doctor, family and patient are content with the fit and vision in the contacts then the supply of contacts can be purchased.  The training fee includes the training, fitting, trial lenses, and as many follow ups that are needed during that first year of contact lens wear.  Most patients successfully begin their contact lens journey at age 11 years and older.

  • What types of contacts are available?

We fit monthly, 2 week, and daily disposable contact lenses,  We also carry transition and colored contacts.  There are options you can sleep in as an extended wear lens.  We also fit specialty lenses and gas permeable lenses. Most lenses include single vision, mono-vision, and multifocal options.

  • I already wear contacts, what kind of yearly exam do I need?

Every contact lens wearer needs to be seen yearly to keep their prescription current.  We will check your eye health and make sure you do not have any contact lens related eye issues.  We will check the presciption over the contacts as well as the proper fit of the lenses. At the end of the exam, we will provide any trial contact lenses needed to try any changes made before ordering.  The basic eye exam is for glasses, the contact lens evaluation fee will vary depending on the type of contacts.  Most vision insurances give a discount on this fee but typically do not cover it.

  • Why was I charged a contact lens evaluation fee at my exam?

Our fees for an annual eye exam that we submit to medical and vision insurance include the vision and prescription check for glasses and an eye health screening.  Contact lens wearers are subject to a small contact lens evaluation fee each year that many times is discounted by vision insurance plans.  This evaluation covers a vision and prescription check for contacts, and a proper fit check of the contacts on the eyes. This fee covers a patient for the whole year if we need to check the fit or power again.
